About This Lesson
In this lesson on Tuesdays With Morrie, students explore universal themes such as life, death, regret, love, and forgiveness through a variety of research-based strategies. The lesson begins with an anticipation guide, prompting students to reflect on and discuss their beliefs about the story’s key themes before reading. As students read the memoir, they engage with “Sketch to Stretch” activities that allow them to visualize concepts, and use scaffolds like the Somebody Wanted But So (SWBS) chart to analyze character motivations and summarize sections of the text. Through Socratic seminars and reflective writing, students are encouraged to connect Morrie’s insights to their own lives and cultural backgrounds, fostering empathy, critical thinking, and self-reflection. This approach not only deepens comprehension but also helps students define for themselves what it means to live a meaningful life, all while practicing essential literacy skills in conversation, analysis, and writing
